Compose an academic essay of approximately three pages (minimum five paragraphs) in which you identify certain aspects of Ivan’s life and research those aspects of life as they relate to subjective well-being to determine how Ivan’s experiences compare and/or contrast with the research. After doing the research, write a thesis that expresses your conclusions. Your thesis sentence should answer this question: What elements of Ivan’s life and/or attitude compare and/or contrast with subjective well-being research? STRUCTURE: Introduction: Start your introduction with a hook that relates to the theme (happiness). Then, transition into an introduction of The Death of Ivan Ilych by including the author’s full name and the title of the reading. Finally, smoothly move into your thesis sentence. Each body paragraph should analyze the story, proving your point by using specific, cited (page numbers are a must) examples from the story. After each example from the story (whether summarized or quoted), you must explain how that example proves the point you’re making. Within at least two of the body paragraphs, incorporate credible research. IMPORTANT:  This is a literary analysis essay that includes research. Thus, the majority of each body paragraph should be analysis of the story. Within that analysis, incorporate research to buttress your point.  The research component of this essay is required. Those who do not do that component will earn no credit for this essay. One of your sources must be from a peer-reviewed journal.  Do not use any sources that interpret the novel for you (e.g. Sparknotes, enotes, even scholarly articles that analyze the story, etc.). Those who do will earn a zero for the essay—no exceptions.  Cite the page numbers of all evidence from the story, even parts that you summarize. Those who do not will earn a 0 – 59, depending on the severity of the problem. Audience: College professors and college students Purpose: Your purpose is to persuade the audience of your thesis.
