Select 12 poems that you believe to be representative of the poet’s work. You will have to decide on the criteria of selection of what is “representative”—there is no pre-set formula. You will explain this criteria in your “critical introduction.” Write a “critical introduction” to your beautifully designed edition The beginning of your “edition” should be your “critical introduction” as the editor. In 8-10 pages or that length’s equivalent if you have a different design, argue why these 12 poems are representative of the poet’s work, given your understanding of the poet and in response to the criticism you have read. You should cite at least 7 outside scholarly sources (these may be—and most likely will be—from your bibliography, but may also come from later research you have done). Your claim in your introduction will need to be specific and argumentative. It is not enough to summarize or “close read” the poems. You should also avoid “biographical interpretations;” that is, claiming that the poems directly reflect events/issues in the author’s life. Instead, you will need to present a theoretical framework that not only links all your poems together, but demonstrates a wider understanding of the poet’s work. In other words, what do these 12 poems tell your reader about the view of the poet that you have developed from your research? How do these 12 conform (or not) to other critics’ sense of the poet (it’s fine to have your own view or push back at readings)
