Your Literary Analysis will focus primarily on either Memoirs of a Woman Doctor or The Memory of Love (or both texts). While the majority of your essay will focus on one or both of those novels, I also want you to make periodic reference to The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. You need not write extensively about Fadiman’s book, but include at least a couple of brief comparisons to one or the other novel. The references can be as brief as, for example, “Saadawi’s narrator’s medical training complicates her ability to feel empathy for her patients much like Dr. X who treated Lia Lee. Both…” 1. Both Saadawi’s and Forna’s novels depict health professionals who find they can no longer separate their work from the broader social and political dynamics of their societies. Conceptions of health and well-being, illness and dysfunction, they find, are often caught up in structures such as gender or race, or shaped by historical traumas such as war and colonialism. Focusing on at least two characters from one or both novels, analyze how these health care providers struggle with the norms of their profession and their own need for healing. Drawing on specific examples, demonstrate how the characters’ conceptions of medical practices changes in response to social and political realities.
