To conclude this module, and equipped with new information and insights on education policy, politics and health, skim the following articles (article1, article2, article3) in the Canadian mainstream media to get the gist of them and identify some general trend, if any. They all report on aspects of student life that illustrate the tension between the financial burden that postsecondary education imposes on students and the potential gains from acquiring this education. Your task will be to put yourself in Paulo Freire’s “shoes”, choose one of the three articles you just skimmed – whichever you find most compelling or feel most strongly about (or against!) – and write a letter to the editor drawing on some aspect of the article drawing from Paulo’s philosophy of education (i.e. thinking like him). So again: 1. Read the article 2. Identify some aspect or point that you would like to tackle 3. Take a position 4. Write your letter! The letter should be brief — no more than 150 words. The goal is to train you to identify one single point in a particular piece of information, take a position with respect to that point – either agreement or disagreement or a critique of some sort – and develop a focused answer. A very important aspect of political participation is to be able to present a persuasive position in a public forum, such as a newspaper.
