Option A Write a report examining the principles and practice of international humanitarian intervention and when support for such intervention should be given or withheld. Details of the task Your report should be written for the fictional NGO, Global Rights, which is concerned about human rights with a particular focus on the global South. The NGO has sought advice on the governing principles of humanitarian intervention, how far these are realised in practice, and how it should frame its position on when to support and when to oppose humanitarian intervention. The report has to: • set out some background on the UN principles relating to humanitarian intervention and debates around these, particularly relating to intervention by more powerful states in the international system • highlight key examples of humanitarian intervention • set out some recommendations that the NGO should consider on the justification for humanitarian intervention. The report will be read by the NGO’s executive committee which is comprised of members of the organisation’s management, key workers and representative members drawn from the wide range of individual supporters of the organisation.
