According to the Department of Defense’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office, “26,000 cases of sexual assault or unwanted sexual contact occurred in fiscal 2012. Of that estimate, 3,374 cases were reported” states Anchan, et al. It is not surprising, but one would think as military members this kind of act would be taboo; however, they are all human, and it is inevitable. Lastly, it is a constant worry if a mother is deployed. When they come home, they have to continue to take care of, and provide for their children. “… I’m not stopping … I have a daughter to take care of and I know she’s going to have needs and college, so I’m going to provide” responds Briana Hawkes when asked about future deployments.
