CRITICAL THINKING CLASS What should Boston do if Shepard Fairey were to place his Obama “Hope” murals on public buildings or private property in Boston? Fairey is an American graffiti artist. Not only is his work controversial, but graffiti as art provokes controversy because some people consider all graffiti as acts of vandalism, and other people consider some graffiti as acts of vandalism. In addition, Fairey was accused of copyright infringement because his “Hope” murals are based on an image lifted from an AP photograph taken in 2006 by Mannie Garcia. Look at some of Fairey’s work, and read at least one article about the relationship of graffiti and vandalism OR the relationship of graphic art to copyright infringement. Think about the question “What should Boston do if Fairey were to place some of his “Hope” murals on public buildings or private property in Boston?” in terms of Fairey’s coming to Boston as a specific situation to which Boston responds, based on abstract principles concerning art, graffiti and property rights. (This essay should be no more than two pages long. Many students will be able to write enough to answer the prompts by writing essays that are less than one page long.) Make certain your argument includes and dismisses the point of view of someone who disagrees with you. (6 points) 11. Describe your argument and the argument of someone who would disagree using the Toulmin terms claim, reason and warrant. (10 points) 12. Presentation Question: Imagine you are in charge of government funding. Which technology, other than the one you presented, would you choose to fund? (10 points) 13.
