Week 1: Reflection-Application paper This paper will consist of two parts and MUST be two pages in length (double-spaced). The first part will be a reflection of what you learned, read and wrote about in the class discussions and through the readings. What does is mean to reflect? For this assignment, it means to: (1) Pick three major concepts you learned/read about about (2) Explain what they mean (3) Explain how 3 of these concepts relate to one another. Here you will have to explain how the concepts connect to one another. Possible connections: What is the connection between alienation and world building? What is the connection between world building and SPEC and alienation? (4) How do these concepts work together to give us a more complete (sociological) understanding of issues and events? (5) How these concepts and how they relate changed the way you understand your world? Be specific here. Use an example. Required Concepts (choose three): , the sociological imagination, world building, alienation/estrangement, socialization, legitimation . The second part will include an application of the concepts (and their interrelation) you learned and wrote about in the first part. What do we mean by application? By “application” we mean to use the three concepts and how they relate to explain your “private troubles”. In other words, here you might talk about how these concepts have changed your own understandings of race and expectations of racialized ‘others’ and that now you see how your assumptions about others might serve specific social functions etc… However, since we are starting out, choose a private trouble and try to RE-IMAGINE it using the concepts that you learned. This involves a description of the problem, through these of your new concepts. This can also involve a description of what this private trouble MIGHT be. Have fun with this–remember, you don’t have to be ‘right’. You just have to IMAGINE–sociologically.
