For this assignment, you will design a research project related to a digital cultures theme. The point of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to explore a specific topic in greater depth and to practice designing a research project. As we discussed in class, you should imagine your research project as something that you could actually complete within a 10-week term (for example, you could imagine that you were proposing a research project for BIS 498 Undergraduate Research (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. credits). Requirements for this Assignment: Your Research Agenda and Reflection must include the following 6 sections: 1. Background Framing and Research Question: To begin, state your research question and discuss how and why you decided to pursue this research project. Why does this topic interest you? Why did you select this question (for example, is this a qualitative or quantitative research question? How and why will this particular research question yield the kind of information you seek?). 2. Project Justification: In this section, please make the case for the project that you would like to pursue. Discuss why, and for whom, this research might be important, and why it is worth pursing. In other words, explain the point of doing this project, and why your idea has value. 3. Literature Review: Your proposal must include a review of the academic conversations that your research will support, enhance, and/or critique. Please provide a short synopsis of at least 5 academic sources about your research topic. Your literature review should include: A short summary of each source (at least 2 sentences), describing its contents in your own words. Do not use quotes from the source in this summary! This should represent your own interpretation/understanding/explanation of the piece. An explanation for why this source is relevant and/or important to your research project and what it adds to your knowledge about the topic you have chosen (at least 2 sentences). Be sure to include a bibliography at the end of your research agenda. You may choose to use Chicago, MLA, or APA citation style. 4. Methodology and Study Population: How you will go about conducting this research? What method or methods will you use? Will you use a quantitative or qualitative methodology? Why? What specific population will you be studying? How many people will participate in your study? Why have you selected those people and that number of participants? Remember that you are proposing a project that could realistically be completed within a 10-week quarter. 5. Project Timeline: How will you organize your time? (i.e. When will you advertise your study/reach out to participants, conduct interviews, surveys, online research, etc? How long do you anticipate that each of these activities will take?). Please describe your plan week-by-week for a 10-week term. 6. Reflection: What challenges do you anticipate encountering in the course of your research? What makes this topic difficult to study? What do you think will remain uncertain after you complete your research? What potential ethical quandaries might be associated with your proposed project?
