Interpersonal Journal Entries (double spaced.) 1. Write on your thoughts about your starting group dynamics and how will you build relationships with the group in order to complete your task. How do you feel about group work? How did your group choose roles? What communication interpersonal skills might you implement to be a better group member? 2. Reflect on the group dynamics so far. Who do you connect with most in the group and why (think of aspects of attraction)? What stage of the relationship (Knapp Model or Rawlins Model) are you in with different group members? Has there been any conflicts either task oriented or personal and how did you resolve them or if not resolved how is you/your group functioning despite them. What might you do next time your group meets to manage the conflict? 3. Reflect on the end result. How well did your group function overall? How well did your group accomplish the task? What did you learn about your communication in a group setting? What would you try and improve in your own communication the next time you are a part of a group or team. Journal – Things to keep in mind This assignment means that you will be self-disclosing some personal thoughts and information (to me) however, I do not need to know every detail but I do expect to be able to tell that you can correctly identify and apply the course concepts to real events. Identify the concept and give an example to support it (or vice versa). o Please make it clear which interpersonal concepts you are using in your journal. This may mean that you take notes on things you want to journal about and then after we have covered interpersonal communication in class, you write your journal using your notes to reflect back. Use the terminology of the field (e.g., “self-disclosure” vs. “we talked about really personal stuff” or nonverbal communication vs body language) Don’t just list the terminology to indicate that you can sprinkle in terms; choose a few that you think you know and use them correctly, providing an example or two to show your understanding of the concept. o Please make sure you are applying the concept to yourself and your communication with your group. Don’t just praise or blame your group members (e.g., when writing about conflict, you shouldn’t just blame your group member for the conflict; you should identify areas where you could have been responsible for the conflict and what you might do to help manage it). o You can write to yourself, to me, or just generally. You can ask rhetorical questions, relate events, etc. You can make recommendations to yourself, describe how trying a new skill worked (or didn’t). Keep in mind that the purpose of this assignment is to “bring the course content home” to you.
