Search the internet for an image of Grant Wood’s painting “The midnight ride of Paul Revere.” Using the terms of Burke’s dramatistic pentad (act, scene, agent, agency, purpose), explain how Wood asks the viewer to understand Revere’s ride. Remember that there is what actually occurred when Revere rode from Boston to Concord and there are dramatic ways of recounting and using the story of the event. A rhetorical critic is interested in the latter, but that doesn’t mean historical information or information about the rhetor (Grant Wood in this case) is not useful to aid the critic.
