Topic:Sports–including professional sports leagues like the NBA, NFL or the NHL– are a form of media entertainment. These televised sports are also fundamentally cultural and economic institutions that can be understood to demonstrate key practices or tendencies in the larger culture in which we live. In your paper, choose a recent phenomenon in sport – the Superbowl, the last World Cup, Cricket, The US Open, Women’s Soccer — and examine how the medium of TV (or live sports) shapes the messages we received. Example questions include (but these are not required, just suggestions): How are advertisements placed on TV or in the stadium? What products are sold in these advertisements? How are certain players celebrated? Why are some people sponsored by Nike or other companies? *Your final essay must be typed, double-spaced. You must use a minimum of 3 academic sources in your work, and provide a complete list of sources cited (a bibliography). You must cite your work using either MLA or APA style. PLEASE find a style guide on the internet to help you with this (I will provide examples and discuss in class). Your final essay MUST include a bibliography (separate from the Annotated Bibliography you submit ahead of time). Do not borrow huge sections of text from other authors. This can lead to serious problems, such as Plagiarism. “Quote” the text you borrow, and cite the author clearly.
