 Try to follow the directions fully and carefully and use the enumerated items below as a check list to assure yourself that you’ve discussed everything. 1) Keep in mind that this is NOT a research paper. Your discussion is to reflect what you find in the painting and how you understand it. Nothing Else. Outside opinions ad scholarly discussions or the judgements of professional critics are unnecessary and irrelevant. 2) Begin by introducing the title of the painting. The name of the artist and the date of the painting is optional. 3) Your opening paragraph should identify and briefly describe a) the scene, b) the participants and, c) the activity. d) It should also indicate the depth of the pictorial space and, e) the location of the participants. f) Indicate how much of the vertical space within the frame the participants occupy (How big they are) and, g) indicate your position and angle of vision. 4) Be sure to identify and describe everything in the image. Remember that “everything” means everything. Descriptions should include shapes, sizes, colors, materials, surfaces and textures. 5) Conclude your discussion by a) describing the organization of the image and, b) how that contributes to the narrative implication of the painting. Your paper will be evaluated on how carefully and thoroughly you develop your discussion. Remember: This is NOT a research paper. Its purpose is to express your observations, insights and understanding. Any other information is excess baggage.
