For this first paper, I want you to pick a movie that was produced by an American production company– and if it was co-sponsored by another country’s production company, that is fine too, but it may change your answer slightly– and examine how the Other is portrayed. For this paper the movie will be “Coming To America” featuring Eddie Murphy. Compare/contrast the depictions of American characters in the movie with the depiction of people from another country. You may spend up to ¼ of the paper summarizing the plot (but please focus on the role the Other characters play in the overall story). Be specific in how you describe your Other and what other country [this might be a region, for instance] or background [it could be a religion] you may be examining. Choose a specific scene in which your Other figures prominently and describe shot-by-shot (at least five in a row) how these characters are depicted. Part of what you will be graded on is your use of our film vocabulary.
