The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize the student with heart disease and its impact on our society, red flags tests and interventions prior to the upcoming clinical experiences and board exams. Each student will be responsible for preparing a 2-3 page assignment and submit to blackboard by March 10th. What to cover in your assignment: 1. Different types of heart disease 2. The most common preexisting conditions that can lead to heart disease. 3. Common and uncommon red flags and signs of potential heart disease 4. Can the risk for heart disease be reduced? How or how not? 5. Medical tests: a. What tests are done for different types of heart disease? b. Any signs/symptoms patients may be experiencing that may cause the doctor to order the test. Do any of these signs and symptoms mimic another disease? c. What are normal lab values, abnormal values, and critical values? Are there particular values you should specifically look at that affects your decision for physical therapy treatment/exercise program? d. What should a PTA be aware of when working with a patient who has a positive (abnormal) test result (at least 2 paragraphs)? 6. Find a family member or a friend who has heart disease and interview them about how their condition has impacted their life.
