International assignments can be exciting opportunities for expatriate workers, but they also can be very difficult for employees and their families. Based on our learning materials this week, and your own independent research (at least one source that was not provided in this module), consider these questions: What are some of the issues that organizations and employees must address when planning international assignments? What are some best practices to mitigate the risks of failed international assignments? __________ Summarize your findings in a 1-2 page paper, and be prepared to discuss your results in class. Your paper is due in Canvas by Sunday evening. Use in-text citations to show where you are applying or discussing content from any outside sources, including websites. End your paper with a References list that gives the full details about the sources. In-text citations and References should be formatted according to APA standards; As you’re starting to work on the International Assignments paper, I wanted to provide a few suggestions for you. Possible structure The easiest way to meet the requirements of this assignment is to identify a few issues that organizations need to consider, explain them one by one in their own separate paragraph, and include a suggestion in that paragraph for what the organization can do about it. For example, you can begin your paper with a short introduction paragraph and explain in a sentence or two what expatriate assignments are and why companies do them, then say that organizations should focus on A, B, and C when planning these assignments. A, B, and C then are three individuals points (though maybe you’ll identify more than three, if you’re aiming for a really high grade) that you will explain in separate paragraphs. Next, in your second paragraph, you explain what issue A is. (Let’s say, hypothetically, that you think it’s important for organizations to consider whether or not the expatriate is fluent in the language spoken in the host country.) Write a couple of sentences explaining why this is important. End the paragraph by explaining what the organization can do to address this issue: in this case, probably some kind of language training before you send the employee, perhaps even a language immersion program, then a coach or translator in the host country if there’s a need. Include a citation for where you learned about this issue and/or the solution, if applicable, and you’re all set. Citations and References Speaking of citations: remember that you need to include cited content from course materials AND from your own independent research if you want to earn a full “Exceeds Expectations” perfect rating on Application. For course materials, you can use the PowerPoint slides that I’ve reviewed in class this week and/or the videos that I shared on Canvas. And just to be extra nice, here’s how you would cite and Reference each of those, compliments of the Purdue OWL page:
