When it comes to his career, Sam deals in only one currency, and that is money. Sam wants “big bucks” and he wants them fast. Human relations and compassion (other forms of exchange) have no appeal to Sam. You can read Sam’s attitude in his movements. He appears totally confident and he seems to know when to be aggressive at just the right time. As a result, many of his classmates envy him for the job opportunities that he is bound to have offered to him. Ralph is a quiet dissenter. Ralph feels that money is important but that it comes to those who select careers that contribute to the lives of others as much as to those who take a direct mega-bucks approach. Ralph made this comment to Sam (a good friend of his) yesterday: “You’re going to make it fast Sam, but I think I will be happier getting to where I’m going. And, who knows, I might wind up with as much money as you while my personal values remain intact. I think you are sacrificing human-relation values for the dollar, and in life, this is not necessary”. Sam replied: “It’s a jungle out there Ralph. You may wind up as happy as I do. But, you and your values will get pushed around so much that you will be sidelined as far as money is concerned. I can worry about values after I have it made”.
