Here is the link to the business periodicals to be used for this week’s assignment and for the course. It takes you to the appropriate section within the ENG 2790 LIB subject guide that the reference librarian developed specifically for our course. Use only these periodicals for this particular assignment. If you cannot find an article that has been published within the past ten years on the topic you have chosen (or on some aspect of your topic) in at least four of these specific publications, you probably have chosen the wrong topic. Again, for this particular assignment, you will not receive credit for periodicals (magazines and newspapers) of a general nature (like Time magazine or the New York Times newspaper) or for blogs (like the Huffington Post). Rather, you are looking for periodicals that have made (and maintain) their excellent reputations first and foremost as print publications in the worlds of business and finance. It doesn’t matter that you have been provided electronic access to them by the relevant publishers. The key is that they are print publications (not television, cable, radio, video or strictly web items). Everyone is over exposed to those kinds of media nowadays. As a reminder, you will be able to broaden your selection of research items for the final project. FYI, no credit will be given for duplicates of periodical titles. For instance, do not give me four articles from different editions of the same publication, such as Forbes. Rather, as an example, give me one relevant article from Forbes, another article on the same topic from something else (like the Wall Street Journal), a third article from a different business publication, and a fourth article from a fourth different publication. The goal is to gain exposure to as much outstanding business reporting as possible that is contained in a variety of business publications. You should have a topic by now, but in case you do not, see the syllabus for some suggestions. Here are some sample topics in the worlds of business and finance on which students have written successfully during previous semesters (some relate to Human Resources issues): the Flint, Michigan water crisis; salmonella outbreaks; the salaries controversy of minor vs. major league baseball; payment of student athletes;the federal court decision banning dreadlocks on the job; placement of toxic waste dumps in minority communities; advantages and disadvantages of Obamacare or Trumpcare. You get the idea. Whatever topic you choose must be data rich. This means that will be trying to uncover the relevant data and statistics. Ask yourself questions like the following, as applicable for your specific topic. How many relevant law suits have been filed, how much did they cost, and what are the demographics of those suing? What is the total amount of revenue involved (relative to sales, medical costs, etc.)? You are attempting to follow the money, so to speak and/or the important financials related to your topic. If you still have questions, call, see, and/or email me. Click http://csu.libguides.com/c.php?g=179887&p=5130097 link to open resource.
