How is it that she is literate when her mother was not? After moving to Sao Paolo, CM de J worked as a domestic. What were some of the specific problems she encountered in these jobs? What if anything does this tell us about the complexities of race and class in Brazil? Why and when did she become a “recycler?” What did this consist of? Provide at least two specific examples of the drawbacks of this economic strategy for her, and how specifically (if at all) were some of the benefits? This diary was originally published in Portuguese as el Cuarto Despejo (roughly, “The Garbage Room”). What does this title symbolize about her status and the struggles she faces in her life? In terms of kinship, what is CM de J’s relationship like with her children? What kinds of romantic relationships does she enter into? Why don’t these last? What are her hopes for her children’s futures? Finally, there are many connections between this book and our project on recycling. You have written research designs for your own mini-projects.
