We see examples of a mismatch of “situated interpretations,” inferencing processes, and different assumptions built on extralinguistic “knowledge of the world” Note how differences in ways of speaking can make it difficult to sort out different assumptions on the part of both speakers and differences in the organization and presentation of information. These differences are very subtle, below the level of awareness of interactants. While viewing the film, note the specific differences in terms of contextualization cues that cause problems: At the bank: Prosody, in terms of Gumperz’ phrase-final cues, interphrasal transitions, intraphrasal cues In the two interviews: Organization of information, turn-taking conventions; overlaps, interruptions In the employment interview: Self-presentation (relates to interpersonal interactions between persons of unequal status How do these examples compare with Gumperz’ analysis in last week’s article analyzing Lee and Don?
