Project 2 Exemplification Paragraph LCMP 101 Composition 1 Introduction: This project is designed to help you use examples to illustrate a given topic. Directions: Write Paragraph Guidelines: an exemplification paragraph using one of the following topics (2, 5, 12 listed on p. 288 of Patterns for a Purpose): • Use examples to show that advertisements cause people to want things that they do not really need. • Use examples to illustrate the benefits or drawbacks of some form of technology such as smart phones. • Provide examples to show that athletics have or have not assumed an excessive importance in your high school. • Include a clear topic sentence which asserts a central idea. • Make sure all examples support the central idea. • Arrange the examples in a logical (such as progressive) order. • Provide at least four examples which are developed in enough detail using specific nouns, verbs, and modifiers. Include details such as names, numbers, dates, and appeals to the five senses. • Make sure all hypothetical examples are plausible. • Use transitions, repetition, or parallelism to achieve coherence. • Include a concluding sentence that “wraps things up.” Additional guidelines: • • Do not use information from outside sources, including Internet sites, on any assignments in Comp 101. Do not use first person (I, me, we, us) or second person (you, your) pronouns anywhere in your paragraph.
