Describe, in detail, how each of these theories could be applied outside the specific context for which it was intended. Come up with at least one example using each theory. Be specific and be creative. Demonstrate your mastery of the ideas that we discussed in class and that are highlighted in the online readings regarding analogical reasoning / developing effective analogies, transfer of learning, and theory borrowing. For example, if one of my concentration areas is education, I may choose Carol Dweck’s “Goal Orientation and Academic Performance” theory which suggests that a mastery goal orientation (versus a performance goal orientation) yields higher academic performance in elementary school students. My first step is to clearly describe this theory. Then I think about how it could be applied outside of its intended context, and maybe I come up with the creative idea that goal orientation in adult workers might be predictive of on-the-job performance. I would then describe this “theory borrowing” idea, and discuss, in detail, how it might be applied. The theory borrowing assignment should include a minimum 1-page description of EACH of your chosen theories, and minimum 1-page description of how EACH of these theories could be applied outside the specific context for which they were originally intended. Clearly label your discipline / theory prior to each response. Following your theory borrowing illustrations, include and answer the following two prompts: Prompt 1: Now that you have considered how theories from at least two disciplines can be applied in an abstract sense to issues beyond their traditional disciplinary boundaries, what “best practices” might you suggest to someone just getting started on this assignment? Prompt 2: What were your sources for this project? What specific resources did you draw from?
