Read the bland paragraph below. Then, follow the instructions, placing your answer in this forum. Bland Paragraph: The boy and girl sat on the beach and watched the sun set. The waves made sounds in the background. He opened a can of soda and handed it to her. They said the sunset was pretty. They watched until the sun was gone, then they went home. Take this paragraph and improve/expand it by doing the following: · Give the boy and girl names. · Give at least one physical detail about both the boy and the girl. · Mention something about their clothing. · Improve description: give an improved description of the waves · Improve word choice: change the word “pretty” in line 4 · Add some kind of conversation between the boy and girl that goes on while you add all these other things. Anything you want, within reason. Try to make it interesting: maybe he (or she) has taken the other there to break up. Maybe one is trying to convince the other to do something dangerous or illegal. There are thousands of possibilities. · Where is home? Tell us where they’re going to specifically. · What beach are they at? Why? · Find places to add sense description (beyond the visual sense). At some point in your expanded story, find a spot to add details involving sounds, smells, and touch. · Cross out any adjective you see, even ones that you’ve added to the original version, and force yourself to come up with something better or more creative. Attach your finished, improved version to this forum, either as an attachment or by typing into the forum itself. The lesson here is that ANYONE can vastly improve their own writing by improving detail, whether you’re telling a story or writing a research paper. Two main things can be easily done to improve description: incorporate more of the senses into what you write (appealing to senses beyond the visual), and improving word choice (never settle for the first descriptive word you think of- it’s usually the easiest and most common word).
