The purpose of this assignment is to do a comparative analysis of two print advertisements. You have been provided with 4 sets of advertisements for this purpose. You will choose one of these sets to work with. Choose the one that you think you will have the most to say about. In the end, the essay should make a judgment regarding the effectiveness of the ads, arguing on behalf of one or the other. Pick the ad set that you would like to work with for this essay. Find possible points of comparison for the two ads. You should consider color, composition, clarity, text, subject matter, intended audience, message, and effectiveness in delivering that message to the intended audience. There may be other characteristics that you notice, as well. Consult the PPT that I have provided to guide you through the process for writing your essay. I also want to provide a word of caution at this point. Make sure that your essay is about the ads that are being compared and not about the issue that is being addressed by the ads. There is a plenty to say about what you see. There is no need to get into what you think about the issue. Your purpose is to make a point. Pointing out similarities and differences is not enough! Design your thesis to specifically mention the elements being compared and the reasoning behind the comparison. It depends on how the two things you’ve chosen to compare actually relate to one another. Do they extend, corroborate, complicate, contradict, correct, or debate one another? In other words, what kind of conversation are they engaged in? Whether your paper focuses primarily on difference or similarity, you need to make the relationship between A and B clear in your thesis. This relationship is at the heart of any compare-and-contrast paper Choose an approach for your essay: Side by Side – Begin by saying everything you have to say about the first subject you are discussing, then move on and make all the points you want to make about the second subject Point by Point – Rather than addressing things one subject at a time, you may wish to talk about one point of comparison at a time. A conclusion should stress the importance of the thesis statement; give the essay a sense of completeness; and leave a final impression on the reader. It is in the conclusion that you will be able to make a judgment as to which advertisement is Here are some suggested approaches: Answer the question “so what?” Synthesize, don’t summarize Redirect your readers Create a new meaning Your essay should be between 3 and 4 full pages in length, Times New Roman 12 pt font, formatted according to MLA guidelines.
