Overview of initial posting

Students will pick an area of cultural anthropology to focus on for this discussion. Using this area of cultural anthropology, students will highlight work of 1 current cultural anthropologist working within this area.

A listing of areas of cultural anthropology are available at the end of the directions. Students may use their textbook to explore different areas of cultural anthropology along with deciding on a current cultural anthropologist to focus on for this discussion thread. Current cultural anthropologists include current Ph.D. students in Anthropology programs across the globe who are active in the field as well as Cultural Anthropologists who have graduated with their Masters or Ph.D and are actively engaged in the field.

Presentation of Content for Initial Posting

The submitted online discussion should have a title that relates to the content of the initial posting.

It is recommended that students begin by providing an overview of the topic followed by a clear and detailed summary of the research being conducted by the anthropologist as relates to the main topic. A concluding section that wraps-up the report by touching on the key points and drawing connections should also be included. After the concluding section there should be a works cited section (see below).

Since we are still getting use to an online format & using Canvas features, for this discussion thread the initail posting must be submitted a typical discussion thread that is similar to a blog posting. The content is expected to be college-level and well-developed, contain structural features such as an introduction and conclusion, maintain focus on topic, take on an anthropological perspective in terms of describing the area of focus and the work by the cultural anthropologists, and utilize anthropological vocab.

Be detailed, dig below the surface to explore how the work of this cultural anthropologist touches on or falls within the main topic you have picked.

Sources for Initial Posting

Students are required to focus their attention on academically, credible sources for this discussion. This includes blogs written by the cultural anthropologists conducting research related to the topic selected (e.g. Gordon Ulmer’s blog The Obrero (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.), journals that are peer-reviewed American Association of Anthropology (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and any of their sub-associations such as Psychological Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., etc. Students can also utilize SFCC’s library (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. resources. Newspaper articles or other sources, such as a blogs written by non-anthropologists, can be used but are considered supplemental to the main sources.

Direct quotes are not permitted. Students are encouraged to paraphrase (and cite properly) and to use their own words to describe the area of cultural anthropology and the cultural anthropologist’s research.

Wikipedia and any associated wiki sites are not permitted. As always, if you are unsure, please feel free to ask Dr. Martin.

The works cited section must be in either MLA or APA format. Students can use SFCC’s library guides or Purdue’s OWL for help with properly citing in citation formatting.
