Assignment 1:

For this assignment, you will be placed (virtually) in a real-world scenario that occurs in schools. Please read the following description of the authentic performance task and complete the requirements as described in the scenario.

“Imagine you are the Early Intervention Specialist in a school district that is working to build relationships and provide support for families with children who have special needs. You would like to create a supportive training program for families that provides: (1) Emotional support for these families, (2) creates options for family involvement in the learning process, (3) teaches families to adapt and adjust to the changes the family and child are experiencing, and (4) Outlines resources for families in YOUR community (these should be actual resources that are available in your community.” Include information such a phone numbers and web addresses for actual resources in your community.

Outline this training in writing and develop three key methods/ideas of support for each part of the program. Your plan should be realistic, coherent, and precise, and should address all three required components in a research-based manner using text support and outside research to create a comprehensive training presentation plan.

Assignment 2:

The purpose of this assignment is to have students familiarize themselves with the practice of planning for the general education curriculum while anticipating the need for modifications and accommodations for students needing modified content and delivery of instruction. This is a three (3) part activity.

1. Read the NBCTE standards, and specifically become familiar with Standard 1 provided below:

Proposition 1: Teachers are Committed to Students and Learning

• 1.1- NBCT (National Board Certified Teachers) are dedicated to making knowledge accessible to all students. They believe all students can learn.
• 1.2- They treat students equitably. They recognize the individual differences that distinguish their students from one another and they take account for these differences in their practice.
• 1.3- NBCTs understand how students develop and learn.
• 1.4- They respect the cultural and family differences students bring to their classroom.
• 1.5- They are concerned with their students’ self-concept, their motivation and the effects of learning on peer relationships.
• 1.6- NBCTs are also concerned with the development of character and civic responsibility.

2. Create three (3) detailed lesson plans utilizing the activity plan posted below. Consider writing an activity plan for a center activity, small group activity and large group activity (the lesson plan also has to contain things activities for children with disabilities):

• An explanation of what NBCTE standards are and how these standards are used as a driving force in the field of education
• An analysis of each descriptor (1.1-1.6) and how each can be conveyed in the classroom setting to address the needs of special children
• A reflection on writing the activity plans from your table in Step 2. What challenges did you have? Where do you see service providers assisting you with the lesson or planning process?
